Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art ofKodokan judo in the early 20th century, which was itself developed from a number of schools (or Ryu) of Japanese jujutsu in the 19th century.
It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applyingjoint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense.Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') andlive drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.
WarriorSpirit Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Warriorspirit Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started back in 2002. As a fan of MMA I was very interested in the concept of a smaller un-assuming person being able to "tap out" a much larger opponent. I can remember watching Royce Gracie in the early 90s going into the "octagon" wearing his Gi and thinking to myself, "This guy is going to get murdered." Well the opposite happened. He walked through just about everybody, regardless of their size and style of fighting. This gave birth to a whole different breed of MMA fighter that exists today.
I started training in BJJ much later, around 2002 I started "rolling" with some friends anyplace we could find, wrestling rooms, living room floors, "the shed." I opened my first school around that time but was mostly doing "submission grappling" without the gi. I then decided that I had to get some real training and after much trial and error I found my instructor, Martin Escobar of Debrazil academy in Tucson. That is where things really started to take off. I found that I loved training in the gi and it actually made my no gi game better.
Now I am happy to say that we are part of the Carlson Gracie Team through Debrazil/ Rey Diogo. The future is bright for this school and I can only see great things on the horizon. Come in and find out for yourself. We pride ourselves in a family atmosphere fueled by respect and healthy competition.
Warrior Spirit is also the home of the Ferocitas Fight Team. We offer mixed martial arts classes that teach the fundamentals of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu to combine them into one fighting art. Students must complete six months of traditional jiu-jitsu training to be considered for the fight team.
